Pennsylvania’s Rich Jazz Heritage

In Celebration of America250PA, Pennsylvania Creative Industries has awarded $25,000 to the PA Jazz Alliance, Inc., through the National Endowment for the Arts, to present PA250 “Our Jazz Story”.

This program is dedicated to sharing Pennsylvania’s rich, music-based history, highlighting Jazz as one of America’s greatest cultural contributions.

Jazz was born in New Orleans and traveled north along the Mississippi River, reaching PA’s major cities and towns. PA played a significant role in the jazz timeline — hosting the first recognized jazz festival in the nation and producing legends such as John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Henry Mancini, George Benson, Nina Simone, and many others.

In November 2026, the renowned Keystone Jazz Orchestra (20-piece) will perform the music of Pennsylvania’s greatest Jazz Masters across a five-city tour.
